How many?!?! 5 subs in the Premier League is BACK

During the Covid pandemic, the Premier League introduced a new rule allowing 5 subs during a match. This was to allow for the additional rigours of a congested fixture list and increased strain on sick squads. The big clubs rejoiced as it allowed them to rotate even more than normal. For smaller clubs, it felt like a disadvantage. Now the rule has been made a permanent fixture, meaning that PGMOL referees will need to get used to managing 5 subs a game.

Premier League clubs will be able to make 5 substitutions in three separate breaks in play with an additional break at halftime. Fans of the rule change like managers Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola will be rejoicing.

Before we get too carried away, the rule, which is already in place in the EFL this season, hasn't currently been applied to the National League or below. We are expecting the lower leagues to follow within the next two to three years. If you're a referee in football Sunday league football don't worry you're sticking with rolling roll-off subs for now. This means all you’ve got to do is get the name and number of the player coming on. Helpfully REFSIX records who comes on and off, so no matter how many substitutions are made during your game, it’s easy to keep track and prevent errors.
