Referee fitness tests are changing in England

The English FA have changed the referee fitness test for Level 4’s for the 2022/23 season. The move to a more traditional interval-based test is what FIFA recommends and reflects the rigours of modern football more closely.

Previous season’s test (Cooper test) was originally designed by Kenneth H. Cooper in the 1960s for the US military. It consisted of running 2,600m in 12 minutes. This type of test is slowly being phased out of refereeing, as it is not sufficiently rigorous compared to the sprints referees are doing in modern matches.

Referees in the USA and Australia complete a similar test (albeit with longer intervals and sprints). Whilst the format of these tests differs slightly, they all follow the FIFA fitness guidelines. There is no escaping the fact that if you want to progress as a referee you’ll come up against these fitness tests at some point.

The test is being rolled out for level 4 referees, having been introduced to Level 3’s last season and is a pre-requisite for getting promoted to the next level. PGMOL and Premier League referees will be used to this level of fitness already. That’s why REFSIX have developed a 6-week fitness programme to help you ace the test. Whether you’re new to the test or simply want to get fit for the new season our programme is designed to:

  • Show you what the new test is like and how to practice it

  • Improve fitness & strength

  • Build confidence

  • Have some fun while training

  • Connect you with other referees in your area

If you’d like to take part, simply use the form below. We’ll be releasing content throughout the summer including videos, training schedules, hints and tips all designed specifically for referees.
