How much do Premier League referees get paid?

Referees have been full-time since 2001. To work out how much they get paid, we've got to split them into three categories. These categories are:

  • Full-time referees

  • Assistant referees

  • VAR referees

Referees new to the EPL will earn a base salary of £70k, whereas Anthony Taylor will be earning more £100k+ a year. They also get a £1.5k as a match game bonus so this every time they do a game.

Assistant referees earn £30k a year and they also pick up £850 a match. So you're looking at roughly £50K-£60K as an assistant referee.

Full-time dedicated VAR assistant referees are on a £30k retainer as well as £850 per game fee.

It's a very lucrative business to be a referee nowadays, which is good for the quality of referees being brought forward and as a protection against corruption. Watch our video to find out more.
